APPLIED AI DESIGN & ENGINEERING

WHAT WE DO

Harness engineering
Agentic systems that run for days, not minutes. Orchestration, tools, verification gates, and the plumbing that keeps a model honest.
Context engineering
What a model knows, and when. Persistent memory, retrieval, and knowledge bases that compound instead of resetting every session.
Self-learning systems
Knowledge engines that compound. Conversations, documents, and decisions are ingested, cross-linked, and fed back in, so the system knows more this month than it did last. The learning loop is the product.
Ontologies & knowledge graphs
Formal models for messy human domains, built for the cases where a single label is never the whole truth. Verified or absent, nothing in between.
Matching engines
Recommendation engines that explain every result they give. Curated data underneath, clear reasons on top, no black boxes.
AI-native design systems
Tokens, components, and visual rules written to be read by people and consumed by agents. A design system an AI can actually build with.
Full-stack product craft
React, Next.js, edge workers, static-first sites that score 100 on Lighthouse. Twenty years of shipping for the web.
FEATURED WORK

Baby names, read like a family. A name intelligence product in English, Spanish, and Portuguese: our own matching engine, thousands of verified names, 130 years of real records, and frontier AI on top. Free, private, no ads.

ABOUT

The Road South is an independent product studio based in California’s East Bay, bringing engineering and design together under one roof.

Our roots stretch from Poland and Hong Kong through Berkeley, Barcelona, and San Francisco. Between us, we hold a master’s in computer science, an MFA in design, and a Berkeley degree in Spanish and Portuguese with a linguistics focus. We bring two decades of experience building for the web, including seven years at Ancestry, and creating design systems across fintech and AI.

We speak seven languages, and that background shapes how we think about names, meaning, culture, and multilingual products from the start.

The name comes from a journey south: San Francisco to Panama, overland, by public bus.
